broken face syndrome

I did break my face. Simple bicycle accident. No I wasn't drunk, as some have implied. Eventually I broke my sinus, and orbital bone. The sinus was the bad part. They had to operate and put in a titanium plate, which they did in a vaguely horrifying procedure. Fortunately they knocked me out. They went in through my mouth, and I woke up much the worse for wear, with blood in disturbing places, but I have improved relatively quickly since then. My cheek is still "asleep" in the way that it is after a visit to the dentist. It makes me want to be more careful in future. (although I wasn't being particularly unsafe at the time of the accident) Incidentally, the Belgian health system did really well, in contrast to our experience of two summers ago.

Oh my god, Thorfinn! I didn't realize you'd gotten hurt so badly. That looks and sounds incredibly painful. I'm glad to hear they're taking good care of you over there. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Thorfinn! What a painful ordeal! I'm sorry that you were hurt that badly. I'm glad you're on the mend. Tell those Belgians if they don't look after you, they'll have us to deal with. Take good care of yourself.

Thanks girls! Don't worry, they are taking good care of me, all at relatively low cost — and the doctors are all astonishingly beautiful, so it hasn't been a complete loss.

Oh my goodness Thorfinn! I have been out of the loop; K & J told me about your accident, but I hadn't seen the picture or read the details until today. Hope you're feeling better.

Confession: I predicted that you were either doing your "no hands" biking trick, or that you were drinking & biking. It was totally non-judgmental though... I promise. =)

James says "Hi" and hopes you're better too.

ha ha.... I was being completely sensible.... I was just switching surfaces, from the street up onto pavement, so that's the only "risky" behaviour I was engaged in. I am now 100% go, at least physically.
